Amazon

Yard Specialist

October 2017 • Breinigsville, PA

What I liked

Working Outside Company Atmosphere Interesting work Learn new skills

What I wish was different

The pay is not competitive. Truck yards can be dangerous and driving commercial trucks is one of the deadliest jobs in the US.

Advice

Amazon offers many opportunities. Take advantage of every one possible.

Campus Ready Associate

June 2018 • Lubbock, TX

What I liked

My favorite thing about working at Amazon are my co-workers. They always manage to make work fun and make it feel like we aren't actually working. Every time I come into work I am actually excited to go because of my co-workers.

What I wish was different

I wish I was off on the weekends. I use to work on campus before I got this job and I was always off on the weekends. So it was kind of huge adjustment that I work basically every day of the week.

Advice

One piece of advice I can about this experience is to make it known that you want a job by going up there and trying to talk to the manager. The more face time you are able to get the better the chance they will hire you.

Software Development Engineering Intern

May - August 2019 • Seattle, WA

What I liked

I really liked the exposure I received to such a huge company like Amazon. It was really impressive to me how there were so many employees yet every software engineer worked in teams of 5-10 people. Overall, the exposure and knowledge I gained from the experience was priceless.

What I wish was different

I wish that I had been given more support from my team prior to beginning the internship. The on-boarding experience was long and there was so much to digest in so little time. I wish I could have come more prepared, having maybe reviewed the project or been aware of what sorts of tasks I would be asked to do. That would have really put my time there to better use.

Advice

I would say that there are a lot of people out there who do not like these big tech companies, but at the end of the day, working at one (even just for a summer) is the best way to know if you like it or not. It's a glimpse into a completely different world, especially at companies like Amazon, Google, Facebook, Microsoft, etc. It is 100% worth the work, experience, connections, and knowledge gained, and it comes with a very competitive salary. Although I did not get a return offer, a majority of interns are asked to return full-time!

Software Engineer Intern

May - August 2018 • Detroit, MI

What I liked

My team was able to bring a project through from design to implementation to testing. We were able to work with a wide range of different technologies that are applicable beyond the Amazon programming ecosystem. I learned a lot this summer!

What I wish was different

My location — I was unfortunately placed in my last choice location.

Advice

Take this opportunity to make mistakes and ask questions so you can learn as much as possible! The mentors and managers want you to succeed and will do everything they can to help you make your internship worthwhile.

Software Development Engineering Intern

June - August 2019 • Santa Clara, CA

What I liked

The work I was doing was impactful. Code I wrote was being put into production while I was an intern, so I got to see the development process from start to finish. The team I worked with was also very easy to work with, and the manager was very relaxed about scheduling. If I had a conflict or needed to shift my hours around one week, it was very easy to do so. Also, I heard from other internships that sometimes the companies wouldn't really know exactly what to do with their interns, and might not have work for them. Amazon was very prepared for me, and even had extra features for me to work on if I was to finish the main goals early.

What I wish was different

Not much honestly. It was a great experience and I'm glad I got to work with them

Advice

The interview was harder than the internship, so don't feel stressed out if the interview seems really tough and you aren't prepared for it.

Warehouse Associate

June 2019 • Grand Rapids, MI

What I liked

The positions in Amazon are easy to learn, and with shorter shifts, time goes by very quickly there! Being a smaller warehouse allows workers to grow strong relationships and get a full understanding of every step in the process.

What I wish was different

I wish that shifts weren’t locked in place because it’s difficult to have a classes revolve around a strict four day schedule unless you’re working third shift. Workers should be able to pick and choose days, but they are locked.

Advice

Amazon provides a great opportunity to clear your head & knock out some hands-on work with generous compensation. Everything you hear about their poor working conditions is with larger facilities that are difficult to manage, but at DGR1 (Amazon in Grand Rapids), the conditions are top notch for a warehouse. Well worth the paycheck!

SWE Intern

July - September 2019 • Seattle, WA

What I liked

I liked my mentor a lot. He helped me through the learning process and made my experience worthwhile.

What I wish was different

I wish that the environment was a little more social, I had a hard time meeting any other interns in my time at Amazon.

Advice

Things are super team dependent, but definitely try to meet people and just get to know things around your team and Amazon in general.

Software Development Engineering Intern

June - August 2019 • Tempe, AZ

What I liked

I was on a fantastic team of talented software engineers that were casual yet effective. I learned a lot from them throughout my internship. Also, we travelled to Seattle twice, one week each, which was a blast. The overall work atmosphere was pretty chill and conducive of learning.

What I wish was different

Honestly can't think of anything.

Advice

For one, really try to get an internship at Amazon over Summer, it's great. Second, don't be scared to ask a bunch of questions and take notes while doing so. I literally had a list of questions and their answers by the end of the first couple of weeks, which proved helpful. Your mentor and manager actually like it when you are expanding your understanding as much as you can.

What I liked

I had a great and supportive team, I got to own my whole project, there were some solid intern events, Seattle is amazing for the summer

What I wish was different

A bit difficult to get accustomed to developing with their massive codebase, hard to meet and stay in touch with other interns because there were so many of us, your experience is very dependent on your mentor/manager

Advice

Make sure your expectations are clear with your manager, delivering results is more important than anything else!
