Sortation Associate

July - August 2019 • Sterling, VA

What I liked

I liked how friendly and approachable everyone was and how most of the assistant managers and ambassadors made it clear that they were there to help and not just boss you around. Although the work was a bit demanding at times, there was plenty of help for anyone who needed it.

What I wish was different

I wish a better job was done explaining how to do certain functions, like stowing, which is essentially required for every new employee. Going in to the first shift, there was a lot of confusion among my new coworkers and I; none of us really had a clear idea of what we were supposed to do. Eventually, we asked and got the answers we needed but I think a better job could have been done when it came to explaining what we had to do and how to do it.

Advice

Starting off, it can be confusing at times so don't be afraid to ask questions. They genuinely want you to succeed and grow when you are there so take advantage of everyone there to help you. Confusion at a job like this is normal so ask questions!

Program Manager Intern

May - August 2020 • Seattle, WA

What I liked

I loved that I was given real work that made an impact on the organization and not intern busy work. My project involved mostly external stakeholders (outside of my organization, not outside of the company), which gave me exposure to different roles, potential mentors, and a thorough look into the culture within the company. The compensation and relocation lump sum was also great. I had a really great onboarding buddy and mentor who were really instrumental in the success of my project.

What I wish was different

I wish there was more onboarding and training surrounding the role and the team I was on. I think that if there was more information surrounding expectations and how to meet them, success can be reached more efficiently. My internship was remote, due to COVID-19 and I wish there were more opportunities to interact with interns that took the time differences into account.

Advice

Understand that you may not be given the tools or training in the beginning, but don't let that discourage you from putting forth your best effort. Continue to ask questions until you get the answers that you need. Utilize the tools that you have to connect with people and network. Most people don't mind you sending an email just asking to have 15-30min chat and you can gain so much insight from those conversations. Even if they are not in your organization, still make those connections; it is highly beneficial in the long run.

Finance Intern

May - August 2019 • Seattle, WA

What I liked

Working in a high-impact, fast-paced environment.

What I wish was different

I wish I was given more direction with regards to my project. Initially, I had none. Moreover, I wish Amazon had hosted more intern events for finance interns. There were two, compared to the dozens provided for engineering interns.

Advice

Always leverage managers in your organization when verifying findings, framing a proposal, and developing a roadmap. Do more and work more than asked ALWAYS.

Software Development Engineering Intern

June - August 2020 • Seattle, WA

What I liked

The people at Amazon are very sharp and very knowledgeable. They've always taken the time to mentor me, and I learned more in my three months there than I did in six months of class.

What I wish was different

I wish Covid didn't happen so I got to actually live in Seattle.

Advice

Being able to get straight As in school is easy compared to staying on top of work at Amazon. No matter how industrious you think you are, you're going to learn how to work harder.

Warehouse Member

April - June 2020 • Romulus, MI

What I liked

I liked the pace of the work, it was quick and there was always something to do. I also enjoyed my co-workers, all of them were great to work with and very helpful.

What I wish was different

The management and organization was not great, there were times I wasn’t completely sure on what I was supposed to be doing, especially when I first started, and had to get help from co-workers.

Advice

I would give the advice of preparing yourself mentally, as you will be doing repetitive tasks most of the time which can sometimes become a lot.

Advice

It is a lot of work, but you learn a lot about supply chain and operations.

Software Development Engineer Intern

July - September 2020 • Seattle, WA

What I liked

Utilizing all the various services at Amazon, participating in team discussions and getting insights into the company, and actually working on a non-trivial project.

What I wish was different

That it wasn't actually virtual (although it couldn't be helped due to the pandemic of course) because i had to learn so many new things on my own. Of course I could always ask my team for help but it's not the same as just asking someone next to you if you were in the office. I think the virtual nature wouldn't be as bad had I been working in the industry for a while, but since I'm just an intern, it did have quite a few drawbacks.

Advice

Never be afraid to ask for help and/or feedback on how you are currently performing, as it is the best indicator of your current status regarding a return offer (if that is your goal). Ask a lot of questions, especially in the beginning, so your goals are clear and you and your employers expectations are properly set.

Packer

July - August 2020 • St. Peters, MO

What I liked

I liked the community of people that I worked with. The environment was also fast paced, so time would pass quickly whenever I worked.

What I wish was different

I wish that the management had been a little different. There wasn't any room for errors, that kind of pressure made many of the employees feel belittled and defeated.

Advice

It was physically demanding job. Wear a back brae and arch supporting shoes!

Accounting Intern

June - September 2020 • Seattle, WA

What I liked

Salary was great, as well as the relocation bonus Amazon gave us. We still got the relocation bonus even though we interned virtually due to COVID. I obviously liked the fact that Amazon didn’t cancel the internship, and kept it a 12-week internship as previously accorded. I also liked how Amazon gave us real meaningful projects, which really impacted the company and the accounting organization.

What I wish was different

I wish the internship had been in person, but we all know this was not possible due to COVID. I did miss the human interaction part, and I think that made the internship a bit more challenging. Also, I wish my project was more focused on operational accounting or technical accounting, rather than in project management.

Advice

Amazon is a very different and peculiar company. It is unlike anything you have seen or heard before. That being said, people are there to help you. Amazon assigns mentors to every intern, which is great. Do take advantage of your mentor, your buddy, as well as your manage. Ask for help. People understand you’re an intern and you probably have no clue what you are doing or should be doing. It will take you some time, or at least it took me some time, to adjust to Amazon’s fast paced culture. It’s normal, and it’s totally fine.

Customer Service Representative

June - August 2020 • San José, San José

What I liked

It was a good opportunity to develop more interpersonal skills and communication

What I wish was different

I wish it was in person instead of remote because teamwork is easier when you have the opportunity to share face to face

Advice

I learned to be patient with clients and to listen actively to other necessities. It was also a great opportunity to develop a solution-oriented mentality.
