Undergraduate Research Intern

June 2018 • Oregon State University, OR

What I liked

Since I was working alone, it was a different experience to work on my own time. Some of the tests I ran took a couple hours at a time, thus I was able to leave the lab and come back when it ended. This actually allowed me to complete a lot more work as I didn't need to waste time just sitting there waiting for the test to complete.

What I wish was different

Being the only person working on this topic also had a couple drawbacks. If I was unsure about something, I didn't have someone I could ask very easily. However, this pushed me to research and gain a further understanding of the topic I was working on.

Advice

If this is a new topic that you will be working on, I recommend that you read a lot of papers that have to do with the topic you're working on. The more thorough your fundamental understanding of the topic is, the better. This firm understanding will give you a better idea of any new ideas or paths you could go down when researching.

Advice

My advice would be to be both passionate and flexible. In any job or internship it is important to do your research with any company you will be interviewed for, but it is equally as important to be passionate about your field of study and back it up with your experiences that reflect that.
