Intern - Process Engineering

Scope of Position:
Summer internship in Manufacturing, Technology and Engineering (MTE) organization supporting project work in the Process Engineering group Reducing defects by eliminating root causes.
  • Working with suppliers to improve performance.
  • Ensuring that the measurement/inspection system meets the customer’s needs.
  • Improving processes and solving problems based on fundamental understanding gained through the use of the scientific method
  • Applying DMAIC and advanced statistical tools.
  • Improving manufacturing cost, quality, uptime, yields, cycle time, and safety.
  • Evaluating new raw materials, new equipment, or new process parameters.
  • Documenting SOP, SOS, experiment planning, and process changes.
  • Projects could support any Corning division or research and development
 
Day to Day Responsibilities:
This position supports engineering & development project teams in a ceramic manufacturing environment. Primary responsibilities include:
  • Collection of On-line measurements & data (both routine & non-routine measures)
  • Sample preparation, inspection, and logistics coordination
  • Submittal of samples to test labs; Tracking & compiling the resulting data
  • Data manipulation, analysis, graphing, etc.
  • Experimental planning, execution, & analysis
  • Participation in overall problem-solving efforts; Activities include things like devising new measurement techniques, or investigating potential equipment and process issues
 
Travel Requirements:
  • Up to 25- 30% on average, depending on the projecting requirements
  • May include international travel
 
Hours of work/work schedule/flex-time:
  • Full Time
 
Required Education: 
  • Sophomore/junior level BS in chemical, materials, ceramic, manufacturing, data analytics or mechanical engineering. 
 
Required Skills:
  • Rigorous problem solving - Proficient in the use of DOE, SPC, Six Sigma and other process control/ analysis techniques
  • Basic data analysis, data display, & statistical skills; Computer skills (Excel, Word, etc.)
  • Team Player – Ability to interact with Manufacturing Personnel & Engineering Staff
  • Ability to understand & discuss how process/equipment measures relate to product performance
  • Effective Communication skills – verbal & written plans, results, and recommendations
 
Desired Skills:
  • Effective presentation skills
  • Capable of leading small process development / improvement projects
  • Organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities
  • Reliable & detail-oriented. Ensures that things are done properly, even if it means starting over.
