Regulatory Engineer, KOHLER Gasoline Engines

Under the general direction of the Regulatory Manager, the Regulatory Engineer will lead all certification applications and associated compliance reporting for Kohler Spark Ignited (SI) engines sold in the United States (U.S.) and Europe. This includes, but is not limited to, certification and deterioration factor (DF) testing, Averaging Banking & Trading (ABT) volume reporting, defect reporting, and production-line test reporting to ensure engines produced are within tolerances of certified configurations. A fluid working knowledge of the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) Title 40, Parts 1048, 1051, 1054, and 1065 and the California Code of Regulation (CCR) Title 13, Chapter 9, Articles 1, 4.5 and Article 8, Section 2484 for small and large non-road engine exhaust and evaporative emissions regulations is required, as the primary task for this position incorporates emissions standards and test methodologies from each of these chapters.
 
Specific Responsibilities:
  • Track, document, and communicate state and federal regulations that impact the design, development, manufacture, and application of SI engines sold in the United States and Europe.
  • Develop and execute processes to gain compliance with U.S. and European regulations and ensure appropriate tests and documentation required to maintain compliance are completed. 
  • Lead production-line testing (PLT) activities, including defect reporting, communication, and problem solving.
  • Contribute sound engineering advice and creative new ideas, concepts and approaches relative to engine emissions development.
  • Develop and maintain emissions testing procedures and compliance work instructions.
  • Review emissions certification test results and proactively communicate information or issues to responsible engineer.
  • Counsel and train less senior engineers and technical support personnel in technical areas as required or requested.
  • Must be a self-starter that can work independently to moderately complete tasks with minimal direction.
  • Demonstrated ability to identify and assess risks and seek guidance from responsible individual.
  • Demonstrated ability to negotiate within and outside Kohler organization.
  • Requires up to 5% travel. ​

Skills/Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering from ABET accredited program.
  • Additional education in related fields (e.g. engine research & development, fuel systems engineering, combustion engineering) a plus.
  • Minimum 1+ years industry experience (or equivalent) in engine design, test, or analysis.
  • Capable of providing technical presentations to various audiences.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
