Process Controls Engineer

Scope of Position:

You serve as a process controls resource for division process improvement and capital expansion projects. Your responsibilities include concept generation/certification, technology development, detail design, and start-up of automation and process control systems in manufacturing. You will be the division wide contact for manufacturing support of advanced process control (APC) systems. Part of your project focus will also be on implementation of PLC-based automation in our manufacturing plants and processes.

Day to Day Responsibilities:

  • Act as the process controls receiver for advanced control methodologies in manufacturing by working with development and division engineering groups. Provide PLC and HMI support to implement these methodologies.
  • Identify new opportunities for feedback control in various plant process areas that would yield significant cost savings/increased throughput.
  • Act as the first line of process controls support for plant process/operations teams.
  • Maintain process models of APC controllers implemented in production by performing step test experiments and data modeling.
  • Work in business division-wide capacity expansion and process improvement projects as a PLC/HMI controls software engineer. Collaborate with various internal and external engineering teams to understand the project requirements and execute the needed controls logic.
  • Report on project activities on a pre-determined basis. Ensure results meet the internal customer’s requirements.
  • Work with project team to solve difficult process problems, resolve project related issues, and develop fundamental understanding of technical/process requirements critical to system success
  • Provide support and implement Allen Bradley (Rockwell) or Siemens machine / motion control systems, system integration, sensors, electro-mechanical devices and robotics
Travel Requirements: You can expect travel up to 50% of the time domestic and international.
Hours of work/work schedule/flex-time: Your typical work schedule will be 8-5pm M-F although you should expect to have flexibility for off shift and weekend coverage is expected to support project assignments including overtime.

Required Education and Experience:

You should have a MS in Engineering with 0-2 years of manufacturing experience as well as:
  • Coursework in feedback control theory
  • Clear, organized and thorough approach towards problem-solving
  • Willingness to work in a plant environment
  • Communication skills to work with scientists, engineers, production team leaders, and operators
  • Solid presentation skills to convey technical ideas and push new technology
  • Experience using MATLAB
  • Familiarity with Model Predictive Control (coursework or projects)

Desired Skill:

  • Experience with Advanced Process Control
  • Coursework in Optimal Control and Optimization/Linear Programming
  • PLC/HMI programming skills
  • C/Python coding experience
  • Real-time controller design and deployment using MATLAB or C
  • Ability to interpret electrical drawings
