Flight Safety - 2019 Summer Internship

Job Description

Reports to the Senior Manager of Aviation Safety in the Flight Safety Department here at Insitu, Inc. Uses resources and guidance from Mishap Investigators and Manager of Mishap Investigations to accomplish tasks assigned by the Flight Safety Senior Manager. Operates in a team environment, heavily focused on achieving mishap prevention and customer support. 
May assist in mishap investigation duties, such as reviewing witness statements from UAS operators and maintenance personnel, examining UAV parts, reviewing telemetry, control systems and maintenance records may be required. Prepare and publish mishap reports that present causal factors and recommend corrective actions. Will be required to track and upkeep Metrics and boards for Flight Safety on a weekly basis.
Internship Goals:
  • Gain UAS industry experience through learning and development of the following disciplines:
  • Risk Assessment, Analysis and Management: Ability to identify hazards associated with UAS Operations, determine their severity and propose effective mitigations/barriers to those hazards.
  • Ability to follow up and measure effectiveness of mitigations/barriers.
  • Air Vehicle Systems: Ability to apply working knowledge and understanding of air vehicle systems and operations.
  • Analytical Skills: Ability to collect, organize, and analyze data; summarize findings; develop conclusions and recommendations from appropriate data sources.
  • Engineering Technical Information: Ability to read, understand, and interpret engineering technical information (e.g., drawings, handbooks, industry standards and specifications).
  • Failure Analysis: Ability to conduct a failure analysis and identify potential sources of failure.

Qualifications

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:
  • Excellent analytical and organizational skills
  • Excellent writing and communication skills
  • Ability to utilize databases and internet for research
  • Ability to work in a team environment to determine and develop solutions that are imaginative, thorough, practicable, and consistent with organization objectives
  • Preferred experience: aviation-safety related classes, piloting (manned or unmanned), aircraft maintenance, and Human Factors
Qualifications
  • Currently enrolled in an accredited college or university, or to have graduated within one year of internship start.
  • Minimum overall GPA of 3.0.
  • Actively pursuing or have graduated with aviation-related degree.
