Measurement Systems Engineer

Scope of Position:

Develop, assemble, test and deploy measurement systems (primarily optics based) in support of manufacturing process control and inspection of Corning products. System development includes working with optics, motion control and system software. At Corning you work as part of a team to manage the transfer of technology from development to manufacturing.

 

Day to Day Responsibilities:

Ø Leverage off-the-shelf instruments or develop new measurement methods to optimize manufacturing processes or inspect the quality of Corning products.

Ø Demonstrate proof-of-concept measurement techniques in our optics & vision lab.

Ø Engineer measurement solutions that are suitable for use in manufacturing.

Ø Work with a variety of cross functional groups (Development, Quality, IT, Purchasing, Operations)

Ø Leverage external suppliers for key technologies or core competencies such as system integration.

Ø Define Scopes of Work, competitively quote when appropriate, issue Purchase Orders, track supplier work and approve invoices.

Ø Design experiments and analyze data to identify and implement improvements to measurement systems or production processes.

Ø Create/update documentation for release to production including Machine Specifications; operating procedures and drawing packages.

Ø Train engineering, maintenance and operations people how to use and maintain measurement systems.

Ø Provide remote and onsite troubleshooting using data and performance analysis of the installed systems.

 

Travel Requirements:

Ø 10-40% domestic and international travel (Asia, Europe)

Ø 1 day to several week trips are typical, but varies greatly by project.

 

Hours of work/work schedule/flex-time:

40+ hrs./week

 

Required Education:

BS or MS in Physics, Optics, EE, ME or Computer Engineering

Hands on experience with metrology is required

 

Required Experience/Skills:

Ø Measurement system development or characterization

Ø Optical system design

Ø Strong programming in C# (or .NET)

Ø Systems Engineering and integration

Ø Digital Signal Processing

Ø Experience with electrical/optical/mechanical installations, including system checkout and troubleshooting

Ø Strong communication and presentation skills (MS Office programs)

Ø Data retrieval, plotting and analysis (primarily using Microsoft Excel)

 

Desired Experience/Skills:

Ø Machine Vision system development (optics, lighting, cameras, image acquisition, image analysis)

Ø Knowledge of image processing algorithms (blob analysis, edge finding, morphology, feature extraction, classification, metrology)

Ø Control systems (PLCs)

Ø Process engineering knowledge. Experienced with design of experiments, statistical analysis and process improvement

Ø Experience with Metrology, Inspection and Product Quality in support of production organizations

Ø Motion Control – ability to integrate motion on imaging platforms

Ø Computing – Familiar with high performance computing systems
